Its plainspokenness I find refreshing. The only word that gave me pause is "modern " which I tend to contrast with "ancient" or "historical." Not sure if such a contradistinction was intended to be made.

While generally admiring the poem I find myself a bit suspicious of all that lush description. It takes so long to get to the point that one has almost forgotten that a point needs to be made. Self-indulgence as a writer is something one needs to be wary of.

I found it very easy to relate to this poem, not only because of the clarity of its diction, but also and especially because of the portrayal of skeletal remains the author encountered in the creek bed. Where I live I have ofter walked the arroyos and woodland trails where I've found skulls and skeletons of coyotes, rabbits, and numerous other creatures which have crossed Styx either naturally or in the jaws or talons of some other creature of those spaces.
